Escape to Bohinj

Hike up the Voje Valley

The Voje Valley is a tranquil escape. Cows graze undisturbed in their pastures, and the only noise comes from their bells and the sound of running water. This hike takes you through the Mostnica Gorge and up to Slap Mostnica (waterfall) at the head of the valley. Two mountain huts offer refreshments, and there is plenty of shade on the way up.

A more detailed description of the first part of this walk is available on the Mostnica Gorge page. This page picks up the hike from the Koča na Vojah (Voje mountain hut), where you may have already stopped for a snack.

Directions to Voje Valley

As you leave the Koča na Vojah, continue along the single-track road up the valley to the north. The going is mostly flat for about 1km, where you reach a fork in the road. The righthand fork will take you into sunshine (weather permitting of course!), the lefthand fork into the shade of the forest. You can go and back along either, as they meet at the top of the valley.

If you fork left, follow the path up through the forest, passing small shepherds’ huts as you gently climb. The valley gets narrower, enclosed by the mountains on three sides. Shortly before you run out of valley, a small path heads off to the right – take this and wind up through the forest to a small footbridge.

Cross the footbridge and bear left, following the Mostnica, which now looks small compared to the river at the start in Stara Fužina. After a few minutes, you will reach a viewing point for the waterfall. After heavy rain, the sound is thunderous, and you’ll feel the spray on your face.

To return, head downhill and keep straight on rather than following the path from the footbridge. After no more than 5 minutes, you’ll see the Koča pri Slapu Mostnice (Mostnica waterfall hut) on your left. They serve drinks, meals and excellent, home-baked cakes and desserts.

After leaving the hut, follow the farm track down through the pastures, passing more shepherds’ huts, barns and occasional holiday cottages. In 15-20 minutes, you will join the path that you headed up at the fork, and continue back down the valley the way you came.
