How to get to Stara Fužina

Escape to Bohinj Holiday House is in the middle of the village of Stara Fužina in the region of Bohinj, Gorenska, Slovenia. The area feels like another world, but that doesn’t mean that it’s hard to get to…

Arriving in Slovenia by Air

Ljubljana Brnik Airport is the most obvious place to fly to, as it it so close by. The airport is small, and queues are unusual either checking in or out. A list of current destinations servicing Ljubljana Airport can be found here. From the UK, you can fly direct to Ljubljana with EasyJet (Luton & Gatwick), and with British Airways from London Heathrow Airport.

Despite feeling like it’s tucked away in the alpine mountains, Stara Fužina is very quick and easy to get to from Ljubljana airport – you can be opening the door at Escape to Bohinj within an hour.

Once you have landed, you can hire a car, use public transport or take a taxi to get to Stara Fužina.

You could also consider flying to Trieste (2 hours) or Udine, Venice or Zagreb (each ~3 hours away), all of which are served by low-cost airlines.

Hiring a Car

To get the most out of your stay in Slovenia, we recommend hiring a car. It is relatively inexpensive by European standards and the roads are generally quiet and in great condition, so it is easy to drive around. In Slovenia you drive on the right hand side of the road.

A list of car-hire providers at Ljubljana airport can be found here. We typically use Sixt and Avant, and book them through the Rental Cars comparison website. We’ve found them to be the most competitively priced with excellent service. If your flight is going to be late, we recommend that you telephone before you take off (excellent English is spoken) and they will be happy to stay open for you.

Once you have your car, it takes about 1 hour to reach Stara Fužina.

Public Transport

There is no direct bus from the airport to Stara Fužina, but you can reach it with a single change in either Ljubljana or Kranj. The main bus route takes you to the small village of Ribčev Laz, leaving a 10 minute walk to get to Stara Fužina.

Alpetour is the major bus operator for the region. Depending on the time and day that you travel, it can take 2-3 hours. The scenery is lovely, so there is lots to see as you meander to Stara Fužina. Buses are more frequent during the summer months than in the winter.
