Escape to Bohinj

Rudnica Hike

Lying at the eastern end of Lake Bohinj, Rudnica splits the Bohinj valley into its upper (northern) and lower (southern) halves. The ascent from Stara Fužina is lovely, passing through forest, pastures and flower meadows. There are few more lovely spots for a picnic, and because so few people venture up here you will probably have the hill all to yourself.

Close to the summit, a large clearing provides beautiful views down onto the lake, the villages below and up to the summits of the high mountains further afield. The far, eastern side of Rudnica is surprisingly steep, and it can be slippery in wet weather. For an easier descent, head about 800m back down the way you came up and then head northwest on a logging track to the church in Stara Fužina.

Directions to Rudnica

This route starts by following the path to the Peč Viewpoint. From Escape to Bohinj, cross over the street and take the small village road south with a wooden barn on your right and a pasture on your left, following the flow of the river. After 400m, cross the smaller Ribnica river and head straight on along the cycle path. 600m further on, the path rises gently to meet a road crossing the river from the right.

Turn left here and follow the signs to Peč viewpoint after another 50m, heading left off the path, first through a field and then into the forest. Once you have been to Peč, retrace your steps about 300m to a small clearing, and turn right, following signs to Rudnica.

The clearing below the summit gives lovely views over the lake. From here the summit is reached in 5 minutes, offering views of the upper Bohinj valley. There are cliffs to the east, so be careful, especially with small children.

To descend the route shown above, retrace your steps about 50m and head east along the top of the cliffs. The path is marked, but it is less used than the way up, so you need to look for it in places. After a steep descent through the trees, you reach a broad, flat meadow. Turn left as you reach the barn and descend through fields and forest to a cycle path which takes you to the village of Studor. Cross the main road into the village, and then take the road, then bridle way back into Stara Fužina.
