Our Commitment to Sustainability
When we bought Escape to Bohinj, the house had not been lived in for 50 years and was in a bad state of repair. Rather than knocking it down and starting from scratch, we chose to carefully restore this historic home, breathing new life into it.

Local tradespeople—many from the Bohinj Valley—handled the renovations, keeping our carbon footprint low and supporting our local community. Our restoration process included salvaging materials from the original house and integrating sustainable features, such as:
- Renewable Energy with an Air-Source Heat Pump: We have installed efficient underfloor heating powered by an air-source heat pump, significantly cutting energy consumption and therefore reducing greenhouse gas emissions. At the time of the renovation, solar panels were not allowed on properties inside the Triglav National Park. This has now changed, and we may consider adding them in the future.
- Thermal Insulation & Tripled-Glazed Windows: Energy-efficient external insulation and triple-glazed windows keep the house cool in summer and warm in winter, requiring less energy for heating.
- Natural & Reclaimed Materials: We reused many of the original beams inside the house, and repurposed others to make the washbasin stands. Old window frames are now mirror frames, and light fittings were made from original farming sieves. These natural, durable materials reflect the house’s history and minimize our environmental impact.
- LED Lighting & Appliances: All lighting and appliances are energy-efficient, minimizing energy consumption without sacrificing comfort.
- Locally Sources Products: We regularly support our local independent shop in the village by sourcing all our flowers for the garden there. We also try to do as much shopping in the village as possible. Our Welcome Basket features items from Bohinj’s local “Bohinjsko” (from Bohinj) brand, showcasing nearby farms and artisans.
- Recycling: Slovenia is committed to recycling, and we provide clear instructions and separated bins to help guests recycle easily.
We are always exploring ways to further reduce our impact, and our next improvement will be adding an electric car charging point to our parking area, making sustainable travel even easier for our guests.

During the summer months, there are fabulous musical evenings with craft stalls showcasing Bohinj’s local produce and craftmanship.

By turning off lights when not in use, taking shorter showers, and adjusting heating mindfully, you contribute to a greener stay and help preserve Bohinj for future guests.
