Things to Do at Lake Bohinj
Lake Bohinj (Bohinjsko Jezero in Slovene) is the largest permanent natural lake in Slovenia. No motorised boats are allowed on Lake Bohinj, just an electric tourist boat, making it a quiet haven for swimming, kayaking, walking and enjoying the natural world.
We’ve put together a list of things to do to give you an idea of the types of activities you can enjoy whilst visiting Lake Bohinj.
Swimming in Lake Bohinj
In the summer, the temperature of the water rises well above 20°C, making Lake Bohinj lovely for swimming. The lake is replenished by mountain streams and springs three times a year, so the water is incredibly clean.
At the east end of Lake Bohinj, 10 minutes’ walk from Pr Méžnarjo, the water is shallower, making it a great spot for young families.
There are many quiet swimming “beaches” to lay down your towel and unwind with a good book. For complete tranquillity, head down to the lake in the early morning or at dusk for a truly magical swim, most likely with the water all to yourself.
Enjoy a guided panoramic trip in the eco-friendly tourist boat across the lake. The boat departs from Ribčev Laz and takes you down Lake Bohinj to Ukanc. The electric boat, the only powered one on the lake, is silent, so you can really sit back and enjoy the peace and beauty.
You can leave the boat at Ukanc to walk back along the quiet, northern shore of Lake Bohinj or, for a more leisurely option, take the return trip later in the day.
With the Julian Alps Card you can take unlimited boat rides for free, so you can use it as a water taxi to access Slap Savica and the cable car at Vogel as well.
A great way to get your bearings is to take the well marked footpath around Lake Bohinj.
It takes between three and five hours to complete the 12km circuit, depending on how often you stop to admire the views or take a dip in the silky waters.
A walk for all seasons.
Take the Cable Car to Vogel
Relax in the café with a hot chocolate, or take advantage of the lift to start one of the numerous, well-marked, high-altitude hiking trails. For the more energetic, try the zip line or mountain bike park; for the fearless, paragliding offers an unforgettable experience.
Hire a Kayak, Canoe or Stand-Up Paddleboard (SUP)
The waters of Lake Bohinj are usually very calm, so it’s an ideal place to hire a kayak, canoe or SUP. A vantage point in the middle of the lake lets you fully appreciate the stunning mountains all around. You can paddle to secluded spots for a swim or a picnic, watch the fish in the water, admire the paragliders above or just breathe in the alpine air.
Hire is inexpensive, and there are plenty of operators on the lake shore who offer life jackets and all the equipment you need.
Visit the Church of St John the Baptist in Ribčev Laz
In the village of Ribčev Laz, at the eastern end of Lake Bohinj, is the beautiful medieval church of St John the Baptist. This church is considered to be one of the most brilliantly frescoed churches in all of Slovenia.
The simple and plain style of the white exterior is in direct contrast to the superbly preserved artwork inside. Join a guided tour to hear the amazing stories behind the vivid images.
There is a small fee to visit inside, or entry is free with the Julian Alps Card.
