Directions to Lake Bohinj & Church of St John the Baptist

From Escape to Bohinj, cross the bridge over the Mostnica river and hear straight up the hill opposite. This is the steepest part of the walk! At the top of the hill, go slightly left of straight-on at the mini crossroads – you will start to head very gently downhill. Carry straight on, and the road quickly turns to a farm track as you leave the last house behind you.

Up to the right, you will see the 2000m+ mountains of Triglav, Tosc and Veliki Draški Vrh dominating the northern skyline. Just follow the track through the meadows until you reach the lake shore. This is one of our favourite places to relax and swim.

Head left along the shore, and after a few minutes the path rises gently to a volleyball court. If you stay by the lake shore here, you will find Café Kramar, which is the only café literally on the lakeside. It’s a glorious spot to stop and if you’re in a big group, some can eat whilst others swim just a few metres away.

Returning to the path, a short section passes through forest, and you quickly reach the Church of St John the Baptist. This is worth a visit in its own right – the frescoes are very impressive. It is also worth wandering over the bridge (mind the traffic!) for an amazing view down the lake. There are more cafés and restaurants in Ribčev Laz on the other side.

To head back to Stara Fužina, take the pavement next to the road north. You need to cross the road after about 100m and the follow the pavement another ~200m and cross over the river using the road bridge. Immediately over the river, turn left down the cycle path (kolesarska pot in Slovene). In summer, when the lakeside can be quite busy, the cycle path will be nice and quiet. If you’re patient, you may see dippers, divers, herons and even occasionally kingfishers here. At dusk in summer, there are often fireflies too. After 1km, you’ll be back at Escape to Bohinj.
